Taking A Stand Against Ketchup- Subway Worker Refuses To Give In To Ketchup Request, Loses Job

They’re everywhere. The Ketchup rebels are gaining strength against the sandwich traditionalists. The battle has even reached a Subway inside a Walmart in what was thought to be an anti-Ketchup stronghold of Orange County, Florida. Rebel Luis Martinez entered and made his demand

He said he ordered a Philly cheese steak the way he always does.

“American cheese, onions and ketchup,” said Martinez.

Martinez picked the wrong night to advance his pro-Ketchup agenda

Lawrence Ordone was working behind the counter.

“He wants ketchup on the Philly cheese steak and I have never put — we don’t even have ketchup at Subway — I’ve never put ketchup on anybody’s sandwich,” said Ordone.

Martinez said he didn’t want the sandwich without the ketchup and that a man next to him in line offered to buy the sandwich.

Ordone said that Martinez mouthed off at the man.

Martinez denied saying anything, but neither he or Ordone disputed what they said happened next.

“That’s when I flew off the handle,” said Ordone.

“He shoved a chair to the side, like knocked it down to come at me, and I said, ‘This is going to be serious,’” said Martinez.

“I said, ‘Let’s go, fight me like a man,’” said Ordone.

“I was scared. Next thing, I’m thinking a gun’s going to come out,” said Martinez.

Ordone said he blocked the customer so he couldn’t get out.

“He threatened to kill me in front of my wife,” said Martinez.

Martinez called 911, but by the time police got there the Subway worker had already left.

Ordone said he was fired from his job Wednesday, and that he is baffled the confrontation started over something as simple as ketchup.

“There’s ketchup three aisles down. You can go buy your own ketchup, and I promise to God, you can put as much as you want on it and nobody’s going to say nothing,” said Ordone.

And thus ends another indecisive battle in the Ketchup Wars.

Premature Ejection – Woman Falls 15 Feet During Lap Dance

Ecstasy turned to tragedy this week in Cleveland as a 22 year old stripper, umm, we mean an exotic dancer, fell 15 feet while performing a lap dance, sustaining major head trauma.  A 15 foot high lap? Was this a lap dance for Hagrid or the Hulk? No, it turns out “The reporting officer said this of the incident: “(The witness) stated that (the dancer) grabbed the rail, as he was facing away from the balcony, and she tried to complete some sort of jump/dance move, and accidentally went head first over the rail.” The unfortunate subject of the aborted performance now knows what really happens in the champagne room.

The dancer is in critical condition in a local hospital. There is no word on whether her air bags deployed during the incident.

Skunk Works- Too Well

Warning, kids- if you’re going to be hanging out with stupid cousins with guns this Halloween, make sure your costume isn’t even remotely realistic.  This is a lesson learned the hard way by a 9 year old girl in New Sewickley, PA on Saturday. The girl, who was dressed as a skunk, was shot in the shoulder by a sober male relative who mistook her for an actual skunk.

Questions aplenty. Who dresses up as a skunk for Halloween? Hasn’t this girl ever heard of princesses, or witches? Who shoots at skunks at a Halloween party? I mean, really, how foolish do you have to be?

One thing ‘re pretty confident about- these two will not be spending Halloween together again, anytime soon.

Bezos Surprises With Kindle Fire HD 4G LTE At $499, Data Plan Just $49.99 per YEAR

Just when we thought Jeff Bezos and Amazon were done rolling out products, they announced another. Saying that the most popular price point for tablets was $499, Bezos said they decided to see what they could provide at that price. The answer? A Kindle Fire HD with an 8.9 inch screen, 32GB of storage and 4G LTE cellular data. They will also offer a basic data plan which will give 250MB per month ,20GB of cloud storage and a $10 app store credit  for $49.99/year. This is not a lot of data, so presumably there will be other plans available, or the thought is the extra access is just intended to tide people over between wifi spots.

Kindle Fire HD- Amazon Moves Up The Tablet Chain, Still Starts at $199, Ships September 14

Ever since Amazon rolled out the budget Kindle Fire tablet last year, critics have complained about how underpowered the device is, about its small screen, and about it’s underwhelming features. Today, Amazon is moving up the tablet chain. The company announced 2 new Kindle Fire HD tablets. The tablets, which will feature an OMAP 4470 processor from Texas Instruments, also is the first tablet to include dual stereo speakers with Dolby Digital Plus.. Amazon also brags that the device has dual antennas and the best Wifi support available. This technology, known as MIMO has higher speeds and longer range. Amazon claims the Wifi on the Kindle Fire HD is 41% faster than that on the iPad 3, 57% faster than Nexus 7. The device will start with 16GB of storage.  With better sound, wifi and storage, Amazon is clearly taking a big step in positioning this as the best media consumption device available. Integrating their vast services together, Amazon is introducing WhisperSync for Voice which will synchronize your place in an audiobook with the accompanying ebook, and X-Ray For Movies will allow you to touch an actor on a screen in a movie to find out more about him. Kindle Paperwhite Will Ship October 1, $119 for Wifi, $179 for 3G

Amazon’s big Kindle event is happening right now. The highlight so far is the launch of the latest e-ink based Kindle, the Kindle Paperwhite. This is the first front-lit Kindle, but even with the light, it has 8 weeks of battery life. It also has a whitish screen background rather than the grey background of other e-ink Kindles. It will ship on October 1, $119 for the Wifi version, and $179 for the 3G version. No mention of ad-supported versions, or ad-free ones, so we assume that these are the “special offers” pricing. There is also a new “time to read” feature which will tell readers how much time it will take them to complete the chapter or book, based on their historic reading speed.  Amazon also refreshed its lowest price kindle adding some features, making it smaller, lighter and faster, and dropping the price from $79 to $69.  Still nothing free yet. Will Kindle Soon Be Free?

Slate technology columnist Farhad Manjoo insists that the Kindle wants to be free, and someday will be. The truth of the matter is…Amazon has been slowly reducing the price of the Kindle because their interest in its manufacture is the purchase of content, not the purchase of the device itself. Personally, we’re skeptical about free…with the exception of bundling deals where it is part of a larger purchase. We think the base device will likely settle somewhere between $30 and $50, making it a basically disposable purchase. Amazon is feeling more downward pressure because more affordable tablets are coming into the mainstream. Some people use these devices over the Kindle, many use it in addition to the Kindle. The e-ink Kindle offers incredible battery life, simplicity, and distraction-free reading. There will always be a place for it. And at a price point that is as close to free as realistic for Amazon to achieve. Either way, the Kindle Fire is now sold out, as well as the Kindle Touch, and Amazon has an event scheduled for next week, where it is said we will see new Kindles. What do you think?     Related articles Amazon is Getting Those 180 Thousand [...]

A Glimpse At Facebook In Its Third Month- Early Monetization Plans

How quickly did Facebook take off? Digiday has a copy of Facebook’s first media kit, put together by Eduardo Saverin in April 2004. The company, still known as “thefacebook.com”, and limited to students of a handful of schools,  had first launched at Harvard three months earlier, on February 4, 2004. Two additional schools were added in February(Columbia and Stanford), seven in March(Yale, Dartmouth, Cornell, University of Pennsylvania, NYU, BU, MIT), and an additional ten by April 19. The company proclaimed that it would have 200 schools online by September.

Despite this very limited rollout, by late April, the site had 70,000 registered users, was signing up over 10,000 per week and was serving 3 million page views per day. These numbers, while impressive, would soon be dwarfed when the company decided to pivot and move away from serving just the college niche.

Coley Oneal Mitchell: Naked, Drunk Lab Tech- Now With Escaped Monkeys

Coley Oneal Mitchell had a plan. A bad plan. We’re not quite sure what it was, but the 32 year old lab technician was “found drunk, partially nude in locker room while 2 monkeys loose in lab“, so the plan must have been pretty darn bad.

Monkey yawning

Mitchell was arrested and charged with public drunkenness. The university reports:

“No animals were harmed during the incident, but the university takes the allegations very seriously. GHSU does not condone behavior that conflicts with the research, education and clinical missions of the university and employees are expected to conduct themselves, at all times, with integrity and respect.”

We are told the monkeys were not harmed and they were checked by a veterinarian, who reported the monkeys are fine.
