  • Platform News
    • Heat causes top of jelly bean statue on Google Campus to pop off. Jellybeans stolen.
    • Youtube Android Player API allows for a full Youtube experience within another app. 
    • 10 will be Jellybean, should be out quickly, as very similar to ICS. The vast gap between Gingerbread and ICS is what has caused the delay in CM9. 
    • Nexus S 4G now fully supported in AOSP. CDMA phones such as the CDMA Galaxy Nexus and Nexus S 4G had been removed as images due to licensing issues with CDMA technologies. Hoping for additional support in future.
    • ICS finally on 10.9 percent of devices, 8.5 months in. 64% on Gingerbread, 17.3% on Froyo. 
    • Google Play Store now allows, as promised, developers to post privacy policies. 
    • Android team, in addition to USB audio support, working on low latency audio, which could allow for using Android to create and edit sound. There are many tools for musicians on iOS.

  • Android 4.1 Jellybean
    • and HTC issue statements on Jellybean updates
    • USB Audio Output support, which will allow for new docks that support digital sound, the possibility of audio input for digital recording.
    • Project Butter – Designed to improve UI responsiveness – Triple Buffering in the Graphics Pipeline for more consistent rendering, 16ms vsync timing across all drawing and animation, touch events etc. Attempts to anticipate touch response, and boosts the CPU speed at each touch event. 
    • Enhanced Accessibility – new APIs for accessibility and related improvements
    • Bi-Directional Text Support, which should improve Hebrew and Arabic support. 
    • User installable keymaps allowing you to change the layout of keyboards. This may also work for custom buttons, like Vol +, Vol -, etc.
    • Expandable Notifications – expand and shrink notifications with a pinch, new embedded content, actions can now be embedded in a notification.
    • Selectively disable notifications on a per app basis
    • Automatically resizable widgets.
    • Simplified Task Navigation, allowing for better management of “Up” navigation. 
    • Transitions to Lights Out and Full Screen Modes 
    • Live Wallpaper Previews
    • Higher Res Contact Photos, up to 720×720. 
    • Apps can register for notification when new input devices are attached by bluetooth, USB, or other connection types, or query the capabilities of input devices, control vibrator services. 
    • Android Beam improvements
    • Wi-fi network service discovery using multicast DNS. 
    • Wi-Fi Direct improvements
    • Network Bandwidth Management, allowing apps to know if a network is metered and act accordingly.
    • Media codec access
    • Audio record triggering based on completion of a playback track.
    • Multi-channel audio over HDMI, and internal encoding/decoding of AAC 5.1
    • Audio preprocessing
    • Media Router provides mechanisms for deciding where to play media. Headphones, bluetooth, etc.

    • App Encryption,  will help protect application assets by encrypting all paid apps with a device-specific key before they are delivered and stored on a device.
    • Smart App Updates – Delta APK…only deliver changed portions of APK, to reduce bandwidth
    • Google Play Services – OAuth authentication, Google+ Sign In, +1 button, Google+ History.
    • Face Unlock now can require blinking, to avoid people using a picture

    • Try a Lamborghini , only 75,000 rubles($2300) and doesn’t even have .
    • CM9 code freeze has begun. Release Candidates will be done over coming weeks for first round of devices, with additional devices coming afterward.
    • CM7.2 released, adds some backported features from ICS, additional devices supported, and will be the end of the road for some devices, and a stepping stone for those devices that can support CM9.

    • Wi-Fi Alliance is making headway with Passpoint Initiative, which will certify hotspots and routers to handle seamless handoffs between cellular and local wi-fi.  For example, if you’re on AT&T, your phone could potentially transfer to a certified hotspot at a nearby Starbucks (which uses AT&T’s land line broadband connection to serve its Wi-Fi) without having to log in using a browser-based landing page or even an SSID/password combination. T-Mobile is the only carrier committed to Passpoint, the other carriers have indicated interest, but haven’t comitted. 
  • Platform News
    • There’s a new spammy ad system called SellARing that allows associated apps to replace the sound you hear after dialing a number with 10-second audio ads. 
    • Thai government has signed a $32.8 million deal to deploy 400,000 Android 4.0 tablets from Shenzen Scope at $81 each, with an option for 530,000 more. 
    • Are smartphones ad other personal gadgets making us mentally ill?
    • Android is Google’s weapon in the Ecosystem War. 
    • Companies may accept sturdier Android Tablet. There may be stronger interest in Android tablets due to customization possibilities for ruggedized constructions.
    • Requiring a warrant to use cell tower location data would ‘cripple’ criminal investigations, says to DOJ. 
    • The future of 7. CM9 continues, but CM7 will continue. 
    • AT&T CEO says that Google determines update schedule for phones, Google denies this.
