    • USB Audio Output support, which will allow for new docks that support digital sound, the possibility of audio input for digital recording.
    • Project Butter – Designed to improve UI responsiveness – Triple Buffering in the Graphics Pipeline for more consistent rendering, 16ms vsync timing across all drawing and animation, touch events etc. Attempts to anticipate touch response, and boosts the CPU speed at each touch event. 
    • Enhanced Accessibility – new APIs for accessibility and related improvements
    • Bi-Directional Text Support, which should improve Hebrew and Arabic support.

    • Selectively disable notifications on a per app basis
    • Automatically resizable widgets.
    • Simplified Task Navigation, allowing for better management of “Up” navigation. 
    • Transitions to Lights Out and Full Screen Modes 
    • Live Wallpaper Previews
    • Higher Res Contact Photos, up to 720×720. 
    • Apps can register for notification when new input devices are attached by bluetooth, USB, or other connection types, or query the capabilities of input devices, control vibrator services. 
    • Android Beam improvements
    • Wi-fi network service discovery using multicast DNS. 
    • Wi-Fi Direct improvements
    • Network Bandwidth Management, allowing apps to know if a network is metered and act accordingly.
    • Media codec access
    • Audio record triggering based on completion of a playback track.
    • Multi-channel audio over HDMI, and internal encoding/decoding of AAC 5.1

    • Media Router provides mechanisms for deciding where to play media. Headphones, bluetooth, etc.

    • and Alitalia pair up, Xoom 2 tablets to appear on board. Unfortunately, to try the , you have to fly Alitalia.
    • Warrantless wiretapping bill heads to full vote. Bill would extend FISA Amendments of 2008, which allow for wireless wiretapping if one of the parties is located outside the US, until June of 2017.

  • Platform News
    • NoGAPPs Project – The basic premise is to incorporate all of the missing APIs that would normally come from the closed-source, proprietary Google Applications (GAPPS) and incorporate them into open applications. This would in turn allow AOSP to become truly independent and functional, without the user having to flash additional proprietary content. This includes a market app, a talk app, a maps api and app, etc.
    • Next version of Android confirmed as 4.1 Jelly Bean, version of Nexus to be first phone to receive update.
    • Replying to User Reviews on Google Play now officially announced. Feature rolled out to those with a Top Developer Badge, and will expand in future.
    • Android Developer’s Site redesigned in advance of Google I/O.
    • Traffic now added to 7 new countries and expanded and improved in another 19.
    • Amazon invites developers to ready apps for international expansion. Countries that will be included are the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Italy and Spain, and the expansion should be sometime this summer. Amazon has also announced a change effective July 1st to its revenue sharing program. “you will earn 70% of list price on each paid app sale. This is a change from the prior terms under which you earned either 70% of the app’s sales price or 20% of list price (whichever was greater). To put it differently, starting in July, you’ll receive 70% of the list price for all sales, regardless of whether you monetize your apps up front (paid apps) or downstream (using our In-App Purchasing Service).”
    • Google Developers Live offers a place to keep up with all Google’s live broadcasts, and archived previous events.
    • Android’s power management API can lead to no-sleep energy bugs, according to researchers. A study has been made of the Android wakelock API, for apps that need to run processes while the phone is idle. As part of the research, 187 apps were analyzed, with 42 having these no-sleep energy bugs.
    • Google purchases wireless efficiency beam-forming patents from Magnolia Broadband. These patents could increase data coverage and substantially save on battery life by being more efficient.
    • Motorola ‘Qe’ compares every system file to stock, slows boot time and transmit info back to Motorola.

    • Winamp updated, adds store for addons, including a Pro Bundle that adds equalization, FLAC, and more, and a plugin that fixes metadata.
    • Mozilla promises big news for Firefox for Android this week.

    • Otter Text and Drive Solution formerly $3.99, now free indefinitely. Automate text message replies when occupied.

    • Swype Beta updated, adds in features already available in Swiftkey, and you may sync your personal dictionary among devices.
    • Go Launcher Ex wins Most Popular Launcher on Lifehacker, with 37% of the vote. Two of the top 4, are ICS only launchers Apex and Nova.

  • Jere’s HTO Evo 4G LTE has been impounded at US Customs by the ITC. The issue is over an Apple patent which covers how a smartphone reacts to contextual links for email addresses and phone numbers. By default now, there is a menu setting called App Associations to manually assign these links.

    • Will Google be expanding the Nexus program to include multiple partners, and selling unsubsidized phones directly from the Store?
    • Google is reworking the Google Play authorization system after issues arising from a new scheme that would only allow deauthorizing 4 devices per year. The system would affect people who continually deauthorize and reauthorize the same device…power users/rommers.
    • OpenSignalMaps releases infographic on the 681,900 Android devices that downloaded the app. 599 distinct brands, 3997 different devices across 195 countries.
    • now dominates Android sales, making it the number one handset manufacturer in the world at 26% of world sales. The iPhone, by comparison, has 23%. Nokia still has 20% of the world market.
    • HTC and Samsung make up 86% of UK Android Sales, which is 50.1% of the overall smartphone market.
    • advises ”… obviously we want the new release to improve our devices. If we determine that can’t be done—well then, we’re not able to upgrade that particular device.”
    • China, the lone holdout, has approved the purchase of Motorola Mobility by Google.
    • Speaking of China, retailers there are offeringa $74 miniature computer only slightly larger than a thumbdrive,with an AllWinner A10 single-core 1.5GHz ARM CPU, a Mali 400 GPU, and 512MB of RAM. An HDMI port on the exterior allows users to plug the computer into a television. It outputs at 1080p and is said to be capable of playing high-definition video. The device also has a full-sized USB port with host support for input devices, a conventional micro-USB port, a microSD slot, and an internal 802.11 b/g WiFi antenna. The computer can boot from a microSD card and is capable of running Android 4.0 and other ARM-compatible Linux platforms.

    • WSJ claims Google will begin selling tablets directly to consumers.
    • iOS wins over more smartphone buyers as Android holds steady, however, 48 percent of both recent acquirers and smartphone owners had Android phones.
